Michael Smith is a 1963 graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He attended St. Mary's College in Kentucky from 1964 through 1967. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree, cum laude, from King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1970. He did graduate work in Political Science at the Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania in 1970-1971. He began working for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Social Security Disability Claims Adjudicator in April 1972. He served as a supervisor for a line unit that adjudicated Social Security Disability Claims at the initial and reconsideration level as well as claims subject to continuing disability review. For the time from October 1996 through April 2002 he was a Social Security Disability Hearing Officer and conducted hearings dealing with appeals of continuing disability review terminations in Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Reading, Pennsylvania. From April 2002 until his retirement in January 2005 he worked as an Unemployment Compensation Appeals Referee in the Harrisburg and Lancaster Offices. In May 2000, Michael obtained a Juris Doctor Degree from Widener University School of Law and after passing the Pennsylvania Bar Examination, was admitted to practice before all Pennsylvania Courts. Michael has also been admitted to practice before the Federal District Court in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Michael practices principally in the areas of Social Security Disability Law, Workers' Compensation Law, Unemployment Compensation Law and Personal Injury Law. Michael has been married to his wife, Florence, since June 1973. They have two children, Kathrin Smith-Serafin and David Smith. Michael and his wife live in Swatara Township. |
